Colon and Rectal Residency
The Ferguson Clinic and Colorectal Surgery Residency Program was founded in 1959. Since then over 100 colon and rectal surgeons have finished their training at Ferguson Clinic.
There are two resident positions each year. Most of the clinical time is spent at Spectrum Health Blodgett Campus, but significant amounts of time are also spent at the Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus as well as Saint Mary's Health Care.
During the course of the year, the resident's have three-month rotations with two to three of the attending surgeons at a time. In addition, in most months there is a general surgery resident (PG-3 or 4) who is also on the service.
The strength of this program is the balance of the experience that the residents gain. In addition to the strong anorectal surgery exposure that Ferguson Clinic is known for, there is an abundance of endoscopic procedures as well. There is also a large number of interabdominal and pelvic procedures being done on an annual basis. Additionally, laparoscopic colorectal surgery has been done here since laparoscopic surgery had its origins in the late 1980s.
