Operative Experience

The Ferguson Clinic offers a well rounded operative exerience in colon and rectal surgery with extensive exposure to all aspects of the specialty.  This includes open and laparoscopic abdominal surgery as well as broad experience in anorectal surgery.  Specialized procedures not readily available in all programs include:  Stapled transanal rectal resection (STARR) for obstructed defecation (ODS), Transendoscopic Microsurgery (TEM), and artificial bowel sphincter (ABS).

Exposure to minimally-invasive laparoscopic techniques in colorectal surgery is essential for the colorectal surgery trainee.   All the surgeons at the Ferguson Clinic have a strong interest in minimially-invasive laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery.  As it is an integral part of our practice, our colorectal residents are afforded an excellent experience in laparascopic colorectal surgery.

  • Each resident training at the Ferguson Clinic typically participates in 80-90 laparoscopic cases per year.

In order to get a better feel of the case mix of our program, please review the current and past operative case summaries from our residents (see below).  Please keep in mind index cases have been defined, but no minimal requirements have been established.
